The ancient city of Adapazari in Sakarya province (population 285 000) is today home to Toyota and HyundaiRotem factories as well as bus manufacturer Otokar. The city has recovered from a 1999 earthquake that left 18 000 casualties. It also has one of the largest universities in Turkey. There is a suburban train service linking to Istanbul. Now tenders have been invited for the construction of a 12km tram line, following completion of an environmental assessment and presidential approval in September. The 15-stop east–west line will link Sakarya Atatürk stadium with Sakarya University passing through the city centre. It is hoped to start passenger service in 2029.
