Alstom Completes Delivery of Light Rail Vehicles to Toronto Transit Commission

Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, proudly announces it has delivered the final light-rail vehicle (LRV) car of a 60-car order to the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) in Ontario, Canada. The sleek new streetcar fleet is helping the TTC to meet Toronto’s growing population and ridership on its 11 light-rail lines. The original order was signed in 2021. 

 

The Alstom Flexity LRVs delivered to the TTC are 100% low floor, zero-emission, five-module, uni-directional vehicles with all-wheel drive. They are based on light-rail technology modified to specifications and special requirements of Toronto’s streetcar network. The 60 new streetcars delivered to the TTC were added to the existing fleet of 204 best-in-class Alstom LRVs currently moving passengers through the Greater Toronto Area. The vehicles were manufactured in Thunder Bay, Ontario, with support from Alstom’s site in La Pocatière, Quebec.

A streetcar built in Canada, by Canadians, for Canadians Close to 400 highly skilled Canadian Alstom employees worked to ensure the flawless execution of this project. The 60 streetcars have been delivered to the TTC and progressively put into service from November 2023 to the end of 2025 and allowed Alstom to create and maintain Canadian jobs and expertise, particularly at its site in Thunder Bay, Ontario, which assembled and tested the vehicles. The project was supported by Alstom sites in St-Bruno and La Pocatière, Quebec, which provided project management and component sub-assembly respectively. Dozens of Canadian suppliers were involved in the delivery of these LRVs. 

 

Globally, over 5,000 Alstom’s Flexity LRVs have been ordered or are in successful revenue service. They are renowned for their smooth ride in addition to their spacious interiors, wide doors, air conditioning, enhanced features for people with limited mobility and improved passenger information. These LRVs also have a proven record of successfully operating in extreme weather conditions, including harsh Canadian winters. 

 

The TTC is Canada’s largest municipal public transportation organization, with an extensive network of subways, streetcars and buses.
