Nearly three years after delivery of the first Stadler Tramlink low-floor tram to the German city of Augsburg, the Technical Oversight Authority (TAB) has issued a type approval for the car to enter service. The first passengers wool be able to step on board on 13 April and a second tram will enter service in May. By the end of the year nine of the 15 Tramlink on order should be in service. There is an option for a further 12. Delivery has been delayed by the floods in Valencia affecting the supply chain. Delivery from Valencia is by road and ferry from Santander to Brugge.

The 42m low-floor trams provide for the extension of line 3 and the new track arrangement at the main railway station (Hbf), where a subway under the platforms will be brought into use. A start will be made on replacing the 30-year old ADtranz GT6 trams (some have already been sold to Zagreb in Croatia) with the new vehicles offering increased capacity (up to 230 passengers on each tram). The Tramlink are the first to be fitted with a CO2 controlled air-conditioning system.
