Austin chooses Stadler trams

The US city of Austin, state capital of Texas, is creating a new 10-mile (16km) light rail line and has now awarded Stadler a contract for 21 double-ended 100% low-floor trams to operate its first line. The fleet will be based on Stadler’s Citylink platform with each carrying up to 240 passengers. There is an option for 19 more cars. The value of the fixed-price contract with Austin Transit Partnership is USD 352.8M and the trams will be built at Stadler’s factory in Salt Lake City, which is already working on similar cars for the Utah Transit Authority. Diesel LRVs built by Stadler can already be seen in Austin on the CapMetroline linking Austin and Leander (32 miles, 51km). 

 

Construction of the USD 7bn north–south line from Crestview to Yellow Jacket/Oltorf with 15 stops is expected to start in 2027 and be completed in 2033. A construction contract has already been awarded to a joint venture of StacyWitbek and Sundt Construction. Funding is coming from Proposition A, a voter-approved property tax. 29 000 daily passengers are expected..
