Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan (population 2.4M) is hoping that its citizens will be riding trams again by 2030. The Azeri government’s Depart for Digital Development & Transport has announced plans for a five-liner tramway network, with the first to link Mehdiabad to the 28 may square in the citry centre. It will include an interchange station with the metro and another with the commuter rail network. A design consultancy will be appointed to plan the complete network, with completion planned by 2030. Baku had a first generation tramway system from 1889 (horse) and 1924 (Electric) until 2004. The city opened its first metro line in November 1967 and today three lines serve 40.7km with 27 stations.
