The Indian city of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh state started a limited service on 6.2km of its first metro line on 21 December. Initially a train is running every 75 minutes between 09.00 and 17.00. The eight-station Orange line links Subhash Nagar and Aims hospital in the south-east suburbs. On opening day just nine of 52 Alstom Movia three-car standard-gauge trains were available. The lightweight trains were built in India at the Savli factory in Gujerat and each carry 144 seated and 981 standing passengers. Alstom has a 15-year maintenance contract. The Orange line will soon extend to 16.7km and be followed by the 14.2km Blue Line.
