CAF has been awarded a EUR 155M contract for 38 new trams (with an option for nine more). The 45m air-conditioned 100% low-floor cars will replace the 29m Alstom TFS stock with delivery from 2028. They will carry up to 281 passengers each (82 seated) and be built in France at the Bagnères-de-Bigorre factory, that is already processing orders from Montpellier, Marseille and Tours. Over 30 new employees will be recruited at the factory.
Grenoble was the first of the new French tramways to introduce low-floor trams when it opened its system in 1987. It bought 53 Alstom TFS trams in 1986-96, but these have a high floor over the bogies and interior steps. Since then 50 Alstom Citadis 100% low-floor trams have been purchased for the five-line 43.7km network.
The current Grenoble tram fleet is represented by Alstom Citadis and TFS trams. (G. Broussard CC BY 3.0)
