It was announced on 2nd October that CAF was the only bidder for the initial contract for 33 five-section 35m Urbos low-floor trams for the new 57km system promoted by Commune di Bologna. The EUR 130M order includes four years of maintenance and spare parts plus an option for up to 27 more. The design includes the OESS supercaps on board energy storage to permit operation in the sensitive city centre without overhead wires. The Bologna tram project will see four lines built, with the 16km Red Line already under construction linking the city centre and main railway station with the western suburbs. The 6.2km Green Line will follow to serve Corticella station. The project is financed with funds from the EU Recovery and Resilience Programme.

Meanwhile in the capital city Roma, tramway operator ATAC has exercised an option for 20 more CAF Urbos low-floor trams, to join the initial EUR 130M order for 40. There are still options for up to 81 more trams. The initial order for 40 trams (passenger capacity 215, of which 68 seated) was placed in October 2023. CAF has already delivered over 1000 Urbos trams; they can be seen in England in the West Midlands.
