Cairo metro line 3 extension opens
The 7.1km western branch extension of metro line 3 (phase 2C) from Giza Mohandessin to Cairo University (interchange with line 2) was opened on 15 May. Three of the five new stations are underground.

Line 3 has now reached 41.3km and was heavily funded by the European Investment Bank (EUR 600M), with a further EUR 300M from the French Development Agency.

At the eastern end of the line an extension from Heliopolis to Cairo International Airport is under construction. 40 eight-car trains are being supplied by HyundaiRotem.

Metro operation started in 1987 and the three lines now carry about 3.7M passengers/day to 85 stations.
