Amongst a back drop of growing anti-social behaviour on its networks, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has launched a campaign to help tackle problem behaviour on its buses and Metro services.
Five great travel no-no's have been tackled after consultation with staff and passengers.
1. Headphones should be worn when using a mobile, playing games or listening to music so everyone can enjoy a calm environment.
2. Passengers holding Metro doors open which can lead to jams and delays.
3. Keeping personal belongings well away from the tracks and platform edges.
4. Putting any bags at your feet to help prevent injuries from sudden falls
5. Being kind to others: The STM is sending a broad message of respect and kindness toward both transit employees and fellow customers.
The campaign is based around the concept that good habits are contagious and use positive re-enforcement to encourage passengers to adopt better habits and show awareness and respect for their fellow travellers.
in 2023, 18% of delays were caused by customer behaviour around objects dropped on the tracks and 8% was caused by people holding open doors.
According to STM surveys, 34% of passengers felt that disrespectful and unkind behaviour was on the rise and 84% say they have witnessed disrespectful or unkind behaviour on public transit.
'With this campaign, the STM want to reach people who may be unintentionally doing the wrong things or who may be unaware that their actions can make transit service less reliable and the customer experience less enjoyable,' said STM CEO Marie-Claude Leonard.
