Cardiff city councilon behalf of Transport for Wales (TfW) has awarded Graham a contract to build the first phase of the city centre to Cardiff Bay light rail line; construction could start this summer for completion in 2028. Construction involves installing a tramway link from the existing Bay Line through Callaghan Square to a terminus on the south side of Cardiff Railway Station. This backed by £100M in joint funding from the Welsh Government and the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund. Complex traffic management work will be needed during the construction. The contract will deliver fully-segregated cycle routes and improved pedestrian crossings.

Cllr Dan De’Ath said, ‘Cardiff Crossrail is a bold and ambitious plan to deliver a new tram system for the city, one that will eventually stretch 17 miles (27km) from the north-west to the east, connecting with the proposed parkway station. It will play a key role in supporting major developments across the city, including the redevelopment of the central railway station, the regeneration of Callaghan Square and the new 16.500-seat Arena and Atlantic Wharf development in Cardiff Bay.

Rolling stock will come from the 36 Stadler tram-trains that are expected to enter service this summer on the Pontypridd–Queen Street–Cardiff Bay line.
