The UK consultancy Graham has been awarded a contract by Transport for Wales for the design and schedule construction of Phase 1a of the tram-train line known as Cardiff Crossrail that will link Cardiff Central Station with Cardiff Bay, in the Welsh capital. The Welsh and UK governments have each committed £50M to the project. Phase 1b from Cardiff Bay to Pier Street has still to obtain funding. Work on phase 1A should be complete in autumn 2025, permitting construction to start then for passenger service in 2028.

Andrew Henry, Graham’s Contracts Director said, 'We are delighted to be part of such a transformative project for Cardiff. The tram system that will significantly enhance connectivity and support sustainable urban development. The team will be working to minimise impact to the public and road users, especially around Callaghan Square, as we integrate the tramline and associated systems with the highway. We look forward to collaborating with Cardiff Council and Transport for Wales to bring this vision to fruition’.
