The Spanish province of Catalunya has invited tenders for a technical, functional and socio-economic study for a tramway project that could link the city of La Seu d’Urgell with the Principality of Andorra, with a report required by July 2027. The EUR 867M study is supported by a EUR 329 841 EU grant. The so-called Tramvalira is part of the work of the cross-border commission and would be about 20km long with five stops.
A fleet of six trams would be required. The cost is expected to be around EUR 250M, with 65% coming from EU funding. A branch to Andorra-La Seu d’Urgell airport is a possibility. The Andorra bus network would be recast to act as a feeder to the tramway. target date for completion is 2040. The project is associated with a planne 57km rail link from La Seu d’Urgell to La Tour de Carol on the Spanish/French border, which would give a reduction in travel time from Barcelona to 2.5-3 hours.
Andorra has a population of 90 000 and La Seu d’Urgell (691m) has 15 000 inhabitants. Andorra (1075m) is a very popular ski resort in the winter with tourism accounting for 80% of GDP.
