Passengers boarding West Midlands Metro tram 45 (with external livery marking the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra) might have been surprised to find themselves entertained on the trip from Birmingham to Wolverhampton by CBSO Music Director Kazuki Yamada showcasing his piano playing with a mixture of popular and classical tunes, from movie themes to Beethoven.
The performances were part of the CBSO in the City week, with the symphony orchestra ‘popping up’ at venues such as New Street Station to give a series of mini-concerts. The tram performances highlight the partnership between Metro and the orchestra, a collaboration that has thrilled music lovers and musicians alike this year.
Michael Reading Skilton, Metro’s Head of Commercials shared his excitement, ‘Our partnership, which offers discounted travel to CBSO ticket holders and performers has been a resounding success since its launch. We are proud to support the arts and enrich the cultural landscape across the region we serve.
Maestro Yamada said it was his dream to ‘jump out of the concert hall and share music with even more people. For me this week will be a series of moments that make that dream come true’.
