Chinese hydrogen tram line suspended

The 6.5km Gaoming demonstration tramline opened in December 2019, that used five hydrogen-powered 345-passenger 27T trams from CRRC Qingdao Sifang with Ballard fuel cells, has suspended operation due to a lack of passengers. The official reason is that the operation is undergoing an equipment and facilities overhaul, and that the line will re-open. 600 000 passengers were carried in the first four years of operation, but less than 400/day have been recorded in the last two years and operating costs are CNY 143M/year with a fare of RMB2. The trams were built under licence from Skoda.

Foshan still operates the 14.3km Nanhai tramway opened in 2021-2022 using 16 CRRC 27T trams.
