The Danish capital København (Copenhagen) closed its first generation tramway system in April 1972.

In 2018 work started to build a 28km, DKK 6.2bn, 29-stop orbital light rail line linking Lundtofte in the north and Ishøj in the south via outer suburbs Lyngby, Buddinge, Herlev, Glostrup and Vallensbaek, providing interchange with the radial S-tog system.

13-14M passengers/year are expectedto use the service and, when passengers are carried in 2025, service will be provided by 29 Siemens Avenio 36.9m low-floor trams.

Tram testing on the first 5km section of the new outer ring light rail line at Glostrup started on 14 August 2024, with 14 of the 29 trams delivered. The line is segregated, but follows and crosses highway alignments under intelligent signal control.
