Copenhagen light rail to be completed on 22 August

København Letbane is a 28km (17-mile) standard-gauge light rail line through the Danish capital’s western suburbs, from Ishøj in the south to Lundtofte in the north. The first section from Ishøj to Rødovre Nord opened on 26 October 2025, worked by some of the 29 Siemens Avenio 36.9m 48t low-floor LRVs built at the factory in Kragujevac, Serbia. They carry up to 258 passengers (64 seated). 

 

On 22 August passenger service will be extended over the northern section of the line, from Rødovre Nord to Lundtofte via Gladsaxe and Lyngby, providing a five-minute service and completing the DKK 9.6bn project. One million passengers had used the first section of line by 19 May 2026 and with the extension in operation the passenger total for 2026 is expected to be 2.4M. By 2030 forecasts show 38 000 passengers/day using the line. 

 

København Letbane is owned by the Capital Region of Denmark and the 11 municipalities that it serves. The orbital line provides interchange with the Danish State Railways S-Tog commuter rail system at six locations. 

Jakob Thomasen, Chairman of the Board of Capital Region Light Rail said, 'The test runs on the northern part of the route have so far gone well and safely, so we can now set an expected date for the opening. August 22 will be a big day for everyone who will use the Light Rail, and an important milestone for the entire capital region. We look forward to welcoming passengers on the full route. The opening date assumes that the final tests and approvals proceed as planned. With the opening of the entire Letbane passengers can travel directly through eight municipalities and transfer to the S-tog at six stations as well as to regional trains and buses along the way. This creates faster, more direct connections across the region bypassing Copenhagen's central hubs’.
