Washington's DC Streetcar line on H Street (Union Station to Oklahoma Avenue) will now be closed on 31 March 2026, without any provision for replacement electric bus service. Sunday service will be withdrawn from 4 January. On 28 May the Mayor announced that the budget to subsidise the free tram service would not be renewed when it expired in April 2027. Now the 2026/27 budget allocation has also been deleted, so the 2.2-mile (3.5km) line opened in February 2016 will close earlier than planned. It also seems that plans to replace the tram with electric buses have been dropped, and a reduction in service will take effect from 4 January. The line, that provides free service, has always been duplicated by express bus routes. The operating contract is held by RATP Dev.
The DC Streetcar was originally regarded as a starter line for a larger network of tramways across the US capital, but the concept has fallen out of political favour, with Mayor Muriel Bowser having little interest in Transit.
