Dijon plans third tram line

The French city of Dijon, that built a EUR 412M, 35-stop, 20km, two-line tramway system in 2010-2012, is preparing plans for an 11km third line to strengthen public transport and contribute to sustainable development. Project 2022-2030 and the Climate and Biodiversity Plan 2024-2030 aim to reduce car use by 10%. The planned line T3 shows the greatest potential for this. The north–south line will connect the Cap Nord industrial zone with Chenôve (Portes du Sud) via the University and about 3km of tracks will be shared with lines T1 and T2. P+R sites are planned at each terminus. The existing fleet of 33 Alstom Citadis 33m trams will have to be supplemented by new stock. Construction work is expected to start in 2028 (subject to the outcome of a public enquiry) and passenger operations could start in 2030.
Lines T1 and T2 carry about 180 000 passengers/day and showed patronage growth of 9% from 2023 to 2024. The tramway is operated by Keolis. Dijon had a first-generation tramway from 1895 to 1961.
