The German city of Dresden, Saxony, has ordered seven more NGT DX DD 10-axle five-section 43.3m low-floor air-conditioned trams from Alstom for EUR 67.5M for delivery by June 2027.
The state of Saxony has agreed to fund these from the European Regional Development Fund. The new order will bring the fleet total to 40; most are single-ended (2901-31, but nine are double-ended. (2981-89). The double-ended cars are required when construction work requires the use of reversing crossovers. The first of the original batch was delivered at the end of September 2021.
The original contract with Bombardier in August 2019 included an option for 10 more; three of these ordered for delivery in 2024. Now the remaining option for seven has been exercised. They will be built at Bautzen with bogies, including air-cooled asynchronous motors, from Görlitz.
Alstom now classifies the design as Citadis Classic. This type is 2.65m wide, 350mm wider than the existing fleet in Dresden, and is used on line 2, where the track centres have been increased, with lines 3 and 7 following. The trams can carry 290 passengers (97 seated).
