Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has been awarded a AED 20.5bn (USD 5.6bn) contract to build the Blue metro line to a consortium of Turkish (MAPA/LIMAK) and Chinese (CRRC) companies. The Turkish companies will be responsible for civil engineering and CRRC for mechanical and electrical engineering. Work on the project should start in April 2025 for completion by 9 September 2029, the 20th anniversary of metro operation in the UAE state. The 14-station line supports the urban planning initiative of a 20-minute city and transit-oriented development.

The Blue Line will feature 15.5km of underground tracks and 14.5km of elevated tracks running from Al Khor (interchange with Green Line) via a new 1.3km bridge over Dubai creek to International City and Dubai Academic City, plus a 9km branch from International City to Centrepoint Interchange (Red Llne). International City will be the largest underground interchange station designed to handle 350,000 passengers/day, while Dubai Creek Harbour will be an iconic station distinguished by its unique architectural design. The capacity of the Blue Line will be 46,000 passengers/hour/direction. The depot will be beyond Academic City terminus. Completion will bring the Dubai metro to 120km. 28 trains will be delivered by CRRC.

Dubai metro Red and Green lines are already carrying more than 850,000 passengers daily and account for 60% of public transport usage in the Emirate.
