Planning permission has been granted for the first expansion of Dublin’s LUAS tramway system since 2017. The 3.9km four-stop line, estimated to cost EUR 600M, will link the current Green Line terminus at Broombridge to Charlestown, north of Finglas village. serving an area with a catchment of 60 000 residents. When it opens in late 2031 they will enjoy 8 trams/hour on the north–south line across the city to Brides Glen. Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien said, ‘LUAS Finglas will offer thousands of Dubliners a fast, reliable and sustainable way to get around the city, helping to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality. The additional cycle and pedestrian facilities included in the project will offer even more sustainable and active transport option'.
Charlestown to College Green in the city centre will take about 30 minutes by tram, taking 440 000 private car journeys off the road each year. There will be a 350-=vehicle P+R facility at St Margaret’s Rd, close to the M50 and M2 interchange.
