On 19 May the first passengers used Tap-on, Tap-off to pay their fares on Edinburgh trams. Contactless card or device can be tapped on the existing platform validators (if passengers forget to Tap-off they will be charged the full Airport Zone fare of £7.90). The system works in partnership with Lothian Buses, which has facilitated contactless payment using the Flowbird system for some months. Journeys within the City Zone will be charged a standard adult single fare. If additional journeys are made, payment is capped at £5 (the cost of a City DAY ticket). There is a weekly cap of £24.50 (refreshing every Monday). The same card must be used each time a passenger Taps-on, Taps-off or the daily and weekly caps will not apply.
Les Harrison, Managing Director of Edinburgh Trams, said, ‘The launch of ToTo comes following months of hard work from colleagues across the business, and would not be possible without significant investment in existing infrastructure. We believe it future-proofs the tramway, making it easier and more efficient than ever to use the tram to glide across the city’. ToTo is promoted using Toto the Highland Terrier.
Deputy Council Leader Cllr Mandy Watt said, ‘I am delighted to attend the launch of the ToTo system today. I really enjoyed meeting colleagues from Edinburgh trams and Lothian Buses to hear about the new system and see the first journeys being made. This key development re-inforces our integrated, seamless and accessible public transport network’.
