Sheffield City Council has launched a City Centre Access and Movement consultation document setting out 15-year public transport proposals. It includes a second tram line across the city centre to serve the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and the Moorfoot area. It could result in the first new tram tracks in the city centre for 30 years; the line to Malin Bridge and Middlewood were completed in 1995. The planned line would enhance the operational resilience of the network by ensuring that disruptions in the city centre do not impact the entire Supertram system. The city centre proposals, that involve large investment, will take many years of planning before they can be delivered.
Councillor Ben Miscall, Chairman of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee of the city council said, 'Our city centre is one of Sheffield's greatest assets. As more people live, work and spend time here, demand for travel into and around the city centre will grow. To meet that demand, we need more attractive, reliable and space efficient ways of getting around. This plan responds directly to what you told us, setting out clear proposals for the next 15 years'. Consultation will take place from 7 August to 5 September.
