In the German city of Halle on 6 December mayor Egbert Geier, who is also Chairman of the Supervisory Board of tramway operator HAVAG welcomed the first Stadler Tina 100% low-floor tram to be delivered. Also present was Dr Lydia Hüskens, the Minister for Infrastructure and Digital of the state of Sachsen-Anhalt. The Swiss company Stadler is delivering 56 Tina trams to HAVAG, 17 of the 45m model (851-67) and 39 of the 30m model (801-39). The first delivery was 851, that arrived at Freilimfelder Strasse on a low-loader before remote-controlled tugs placed it in the depot. Testing and commissioning of this and subsequent deliveries will now take place before the first passengers can board in summer 2025. They will replace the DWA/Bautzen MGT6D trams in the fleet dating from 1996/97.
Tina stands for Total Integrated Low-Floor Drive and is air-conditioned for passenger comfort. External mirrors are replaced by cameras and monitors for the driver and there are energy-saving LED lights. The three-section tram can carry 167 passengers (64 seated), while the five-section car accommodates 269 (96 seated). The state is giving 45% towards the EUR 172M cost and the city 15% with the remainder coming from HAVAG and Stadtwerke Halle.
Halle opened its metre-gauge tramway in 1882, initially a horse tramway, but electrified from 1891. Today there are 12 lines covering 87.6km.
