In the next step towards replacing its original Croydon tram fleet, four companies have been pre-qualified and invited to submit bids to build 24 trams (option a further 16) in response to the tender.

They are Alstom, CAF, Hitachi and Stadler. The new trams should enhance both reliability and passenger comfort and will be air-conditioned. The award of any contract is subject to the government agreeing a £385M funding package with Transport for London.

The 17-mile (28km) Croydon Tramlink was opened in May 2000 using 24 Bombardier CR4000 30.1m trams built in Vienna in 1998-1999. The fleet was boosted with 12 Berlin-built Stadler Variobahn in 2011-2016.
