A consortium of Siemens Mobility and Stadler has been selected to supply 226 1500V dc four-car S-bane trains equipped with GoA4 automatic train operation for the Danish capital. The contract includes 30 years of maintenance and is worth around EUR 3bn. There is an option for a further 100 trains. The new fleet should start to enter service in 2032 and all be delivered by 2040, increasing capacity on the network by 35%. Siemens will be responsible for propulsion and braking equipment, on-board power, vehicle and train control systems and vehicle bogies. Stadler will provide the car bodies, fitting out and final assembly. Fleming Jensen, CEO at DSB, said 'This is the largest investment in the 90-year history of the S-Bane. With this investment, DSB takes another important step toward future proofing the capital’s public transport. Increased frequency and capacity will ensure that the S-Bane keeps up with growing demand and maintains its role as the backbone of Copenhagen’s transport network’.
The S-bane network covers 170km in København and suburbs and has operated since 1934. The present generation of rolling stock was introduced in 1996.
