Gold Coast tram completed with new extension

In Australia, after four years of construction, the 6.7km Gold Coast tramway extension from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads was opened on 9 August. This was stage III of the 34.4km north–south tram line linking Gold Coast University and Burleigh Heads and cost AUD 1.55bn compared with an original estimate of AUD 709M, largely due to the need to upgrade 48km sewer and water infrastructure not originally identified. Stage IV of the tramway project, linking Burleigh Heads with Gold Coast Airport was cancelled by the Queensland Government in 2025 after cost increase from AUD 5.7bn to AUD 9.8bn was identified. A dedicated bus link will take its place. The tramway has a flat fare of AUD 0.50 and operates every 7-10 minute 05.00-24.00, with 24-hour weekend service. The Olympic Games are due to come to the area in 2032.
