On 30 April the Government of Ontario in Canada awarded the first contract for the Hamilton LRT project to Hamilton Transit Alliance, led by Aecon Infrastructure Inc. The 14km (8.7-mile) scheme is due for completion in 2030, though this will not be confirmed until 2027 or 2028. The Canadian government is providing CAD 1.76bn and the province CAD 1.64bn. The line will link McMaster University on Main Street to Eastgate Square via the city centre with 16 stops.
The project dates back to 2017 but was cancelled in 2019 due to burgeoning costs. A revival came in 2021.
