Alstom has been awarded a EUR 2.8bn framework contract for up to 374 new stainless steel U-Bahn trains
Alstom has been awarded a EUR 2.8bn framework contract for up to 374 new stainless steel U-Bahn trains, with a firm order for 48 (for new, initially, 5.8km line U5 between Bramfeld and City-Nord, that will use automated trains with Urbalis CBTC).

Operator Hamburger Hochbahn wants 120 DT6-A driverless trains for automatic train operation and 256 DT6-F driver-operated trains to replace the DT4 trains and add capacity on the existing network.

The trains will be built at Alstom’s Salzgitter factory with delivery starting early in 2028 (U5 is due to open in 2029). They will be 40m long and 2.73m wide - accommodating up to 850 passengers when three sets are coupled.

Hamburger Hochbahn CEO, Robert Heinrich, said, ‘The DT6 will offer customers a completely new experience, from the interior design, transparency and brightness to the modern information systems that will provide passengers with optimum orientation. There will be USB charging points and air-conditioning’.

The standard-gauge Hamburg metro was founded as an elevated ring line in 1911 and has grown to a 105.8km network worked by 290 trains carrying around 400M passengers/year.
