The Vietnamese capital (population 8.6M) has been engaged in metro construction since 2011 and opened its first line (Line 2) in November 2021.
On 8 August 2024 metro operation started at 08.00 on the 8.5km elevated eight-station section of line 3 (Nhon–Hanoi Station) using 10 Alstom four-car trains and with 15 days of free operation.
A 10-minute service is provided 05.30-22.00. A 2.5km underground section has been built, but remains to be commissioned. This will provide interchange with line 2 at Cát Linh.
A day ticket costs VND 24 000. Line 3 has been financed by the French government, European Investment Bank and Asian Development Bank (line 2 had been financed, built and equipped by Chinese interests).
