Stadler has won the order for 63 trams for the Finnish capital; 30 single-ended (30m)( and 33 double-ended (33m). The EUR 271M contract with Pääkaupunkseudun Kaupunkiliikenne covers the delivery of the company’s Tango low-floor tram design with all-motored rotating bogies, and includes spare parts supply for 30 years. There is an option for a further 120 trams. Only Stadler and Skoda Transtech (current supplier of new trams to the city) submitted a bid. It is expected the trams will be assembled at Stadler’s Polish factory, with delivery starting in 2028. The single-ended trams will replace the 52 remaining high-floor Valmet trams from 1973-87, while the double-ended trams will be for new suburban lines in West Helsinki and Vantaa. This is Stadler’s first tram order from Finland (it has delivered FLIRT trains), and the bid met Helsinki’s 1600 technical and environmental requirements, including the ability to operate at temperatures as low as -35oC.

Ansgar Brockmeyer, Executive Vice-President for Sales & Marketing at Stadler, said, ‘The Helsinki Metropolitan Area has a tradition of trams that have defined urban mobility through the decades. We are honoured that the Stadler Tango Nordic has been selected to carry this legacy forward and help shape the future of public transport in this region. Passengers can look forward to a comfortable, modern tram that meets the highest standards’.
The Helsinki Tango has been designed by Finnish studio Aidan. (Stadler)
