This city of 1M in Gyeonggi province has been designated a Special City, with the emphasis on sustainability. The city has grown from a population of 210 000 in 2001 and is now home to the largest number of companies of any city in South Korea. It plans to attract KRW 20 tr (USD 15.3bn) in corporate investment by 2026. Tenders have been invited for a 13.8km tram line from Mangpo metro station to Banggyo-dong (red Line) and a 17.8km line from Byeongjeom metro station to Dongtan terminus of Great Train Express line A (GTX-A opened in 2024). Construction work could start this year and the lines will be catenary-free with either battery or hydrogen powered cars. Passenger service on the Dongtan Tram is planned for 2028. 
 
Hwaseong is served by one station (Byeongjeom) of Seoul metro line 1, opened in 1974.
