Kenya set to get first metro

The Kenyan capital, Nairobi, that first considered building a metro as long ago as 1948, has finally set a project in motion. The county of Nairobi has approved the development of two metro lines for completion by 2035. A 10km circular line with eight stations would serve the Central Business District. One station would provide interchange with a 30km elevated line serving Eastlands, with a terminus at Kayla. 

 

The estimated cost is estimated to be USD 7.8bn, including USD 900M for rolling stock. Procurement should start in 2028. Eastlands commuters at present spend between 2h 30m and 3h in traffic every day, a figure likely to worsen by 30m if nothing is done.
