The first tram to run over the new 5.5km tramway from Heembeek to Hôpital Militaire was 4046 during trials on 8 August. Passenger service of new tram line 10, Churchill–Hôpital Militaire, started on 23 September after an inauguration ceremony with HM King Philippe two days earlier.
Associated route changes were the withdrawal of line 3 and the new line 35 (Bienfaiteurs–Esplanade). Several bus lines have been re-orientated as tramway feeders.
The new tramway branch in the northern suburb of Nader-over-Heembeek was authorised in 2019 and has taken two years to build. There are nine new tram stops, including the terminus. In the city centre line 10 uses the north–south pre-metro subway before coming to the surface again to Churchill terminus.
The subway is in the process of being converted to a full metro, and when this happens line 10 will be cut back to terminate at Rogier.
Bombardier tram 4059 in purple livery awaits King Phillippe for the inaugural ride on 21 September. (STIB)
