The city council is planning to build a 12km tram line east from Praça do Comércio to the coastal communities of Santa Apolónia, Parque das Nações, Oriente and Sacavé, all on dedicated right-of-way, a first for the Portuguese capital. The running time from the city centre will be 35 minutes. It is hoped to complete work on line 16E in 2028. A budget of EUR 160M includes new rolling stock (up to 20 trams). CA low-floor tram 605, one of 15 delivered recently, was displayed during the media presentation of the project on 5 April, when a patronage figure of 7.6 to 8.1M passengers/year was predicted, with 16-18% of these new to public transport.
The 900mm-gauge, 31km, six-line Lisboa tramway system is operated by the city through its Carris subsidiary with 78 trams. Horse trams were operated from 1873 and electric trams from 1901.
