The Manchester Marathon on 19 April saw the highest number of passengers ever recorded in a single day in the tramway network’s history. With 42 000 runners and 150 000 spectators, the trams carried 202 437 passengers in total, compared with 102 594 on Marathon day in 2021. Of course in 2026 there was a certain football match as well (Manchester City v Arsenal) which added to the doubled patronage.
Danny Vaughan, Chief Network Officer for Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said, ‘From the record numbers of people taking part to the milestones we marked across Metrolink and cycle hire, we are delighted that this year’s Manchester Marathon was a huge success and we want to congratulate everyone who took part on the day. The demand for bikes and trams on Sunday shows just how essential the network is when it comes to supporting major sporting events and helping residents a visitors get around safely’.
