As part of the investment of £150M in Manchester’s tram network, there will be no trams from Victoria to Rochdale for the last two weeks of May, to permit essential track replacement work. This will also enable a permanent fix to the landslip at Denker to be carried out. There will also be improvement work at Piccadilly Gardens in the city centre from 25-29 May updating equipment that has been in place since the line opened in 1992. No trams will run between St Peter’s Square/Market Street and Piccadilly. A 15-minute service will be provided between Exchange Square and East Didsbury, between Bury and Altrincham, from Manchester Airport to Victoria via Market Street, from Deansgate-Castlefield to Eccles via Media City, from Trafford Centre to Crtumpsall via Market Street and from Piccadilly to Ashton-under-Lyne.

Ian Davies, Transport for Greater Manchester’s Network Director, said, 'These improvements are part of our continued £150m investment to make our tram network safer, more reliable and more resilient for the long term. It’s a really big job, which means we have to close the line to get it done, but in the longer term this will make a real difference to everyone that travels with us. We’d like to thank people for their patience while this essential work takes place. We’ll have replacement bus services in place, and our staff will be out across the network to help everyone make their journey as usual’.

The tram line to Oldham and Rochdale was built;t in 2011-2013 using railway alignment with new street track to reach the town centres. Oldham and Rochdale are normally served by a through service from East Didsbury.
