The Midland Metro Alliance, responsible for tramway expansion in the UK’s West Midlands, marked its 10th anniversary in August with a review of its achievements and future prospects. Since the Alliance was founded in 2016 it has delivered extensions to Birmingham Westside (Edgbaston Village) and Wolverhampton Rail Station plus track renewal in Bilston Rd and Corporation St, as well as introducing Buy Before You Board ticketing. It is currently working on the Eastside Extension (Digbeth), Wednesbury to Brierly Hill (Dudley). depot expansion and traction power upgrades. All this totals 36.6km of track and 24 tram stops. Passenger satisfaction is measured at 91% with 9 million annual passenger journeys achieved.
The Midland Mero Alliance consists of the West Midlands Combined Authority, which owns the tramway, a consortium of design experts from Egis, Tony Gee and Pell Frischmann, and rail construction specialist Cloas Rail, Barhale, Bouygues UK and Ductus Management Group. The Alliance hs won the Outstanding Engineering Achievement at the annual Light Rail Awards.
