On 18 October 2025, the first new tram extension opened in Montpellier, France since July 2016. The 1.3 km long extension of Line 1 runs from Odysseum to Gare Sud de France and connects the TGV station of the same name, located southeast of the main station Montpellier Saint-Roch. The journey time from the high-speed rail station, which originally opened in 2018, to the city centre is approximately 20 minutes, with Line 1 running every five minutes during peak hours. The infrastructure project cost around EUR 50M and construction began in autumn 2023.
Initially, 3800 daily passengers are expected, but this figure is likely to increase significantly in the medium term, as a new urban district is currently being developed around the TGV station. The next major network expansion in Montpellier is scheduled to open on 20 December 2025, with the grand inauguration of the 16 km long Line 5, featuring a total of 27 stops. This all new line will run from Grés de Montpellier in the west to Clapiers in the north, using existing routes in the city centre between Saint-Denis and Saint-Éloi.
