Prime Minister Mark Carney inaugurated the 14-station, 33km Gare Centrale to Deux-Montagnes line of the REM automated private-sector metro on 14 November with free travel before revenue operation started on 17 November. 250 000 passengers took advantage of this. The system is now a 49.6km line connecting North Shore and South Shore. Alstom has supplied 106 two-car train sets and Urbalis GoA4 automation. The next opening will be the branch to Anse-a-l’Orme in spring 2026. A branch to Montréal-Trudeau International Airport will follow in 2027 taking the system to 67km. Operations and maintenance are carried out by the Alstom/AtkinsRéalis joint venture. The Deux-Montagnes line is on the alignment of the former Canadian National electrified commuter rail line, closed in 2020.

Prime Minister carney said, ’The REM is a world class infrastructure project that connects Montréal, creates thousands of high-paying careers, and catalyses innovative partnerships between public and private sectors. As Québéc’s largest public transit project for half a century, the REM is testament to our ambition to build big, build bold and build Québéc strong so we can build Canada strong’.
