On 9 April Moskva (Moscow) Mayor Sergey Sobyanin inaugurated Diameter tram line T2 that runs for 33km from MCD-4 Novogireevo station in the east to Chertanovskaya station in the south via four central area railway stations (Yaroslavsky, Leningradsky, Kazansky and Paveletsky. There is interchange with 31 metro stations. The 79-stop line has an end-to-end running time of over 140 minutes. The number of tram passengers has grown significantly since the opening of the first Diameter line T1 in 2025 as part of the plan to create a ‘surface metro’ providing new routes across the city, reduced travel times and convenient transfers to metro and commuter rail lines. Line T2 shares 10km with line T1, including the key new link along Academician Sakharov Avenue. Operator Moskva Metro said, ‘Development of the tram network remains one of the priorities of the city’s transport strategy, and infrastructure modernisation and rolling stock renewals are planned for the coming years to improve the speed, reliability and environmental friendliness of the surface transport system.
Line T2 is operated using 51 PKTS 71-911 Lyonok-M low-floor bogie trams providing a six-minute headway. PKTS are delivering 100 of these trams that have traction batteries to provide power on up to 4km sections of line without overhead.
