New tram-train depot for Chemnitz

Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen, the co-ordinating authority for passenger transport in the central German city of Chemnitz, is to build a new depot to house the 19 Stadler Citylink dual-voltage LRVs on order for the next phase of the Chemnizer Modell, located on Sachsen-Allee between the main railway station (Hbf) and August~Bebel-Strasse. The total cost of the depot, LRVs and 15 years maintenance is EUR 234.6M.
The new depot, that will also accommodate 15 CVAG city trams, should be operational in 2027. Stage 5 of the Chemnitzer Modell involves the lines to Stollberg and Mittweida, and includes 3.5km of new 750 V dc line linking Bahnhof Stollberg with the railway line to St Egidien; the latter will be electrified at 15 kV ac. The new depot will include a 120 x 44m workshop building including a wheel lathe, 31tracks totalling 7km, 40 sets of points, facilities for interior cleaning a toilet waste disposal. The project is co-financed by tax revenues on the basis of the budget approved by the Saxon State Parliament.
