PESA present next generation tram design

The Polish rolling stock builder PESA, based in Bydgoszcz, has been building low-floor trams to its Swing and Twist designs since 2009. Now version 3.0 of these platforms has been unveiled featuring a low floor throughout without ramps and high-floor areas. In this way it is keeping up with rivals such as Alstom, Skoda and Stadler, that are all competing for the lucrative European market. The new design will also have an energy storage system to permit up to 3km to be run without overhead wire, and a modern anti-collision system using radar and camera technology to reduce the likelihood of unwanted impact with other vehicles and pedestrians. A 40m example has six rotating bogies and four long plus one short body sections - the Polish cities of Kraków and Gdansk are currently tendering for new trams that will be similar to this specification. The first could take to the road in 2027. The new PESA trams will be lighter and quieter than their predecessors.
PESA delivers not only to its home market in Poland; it has just delivered batches of trams to Tallinn in Estonia and Sofia in Bulgaria, and is part of the consortium selected to build and equip Jerusalem’s Blue Line with 132 trams.
