PESA’s Twist 3.0 (see our 20 January report) has been selected by the Polish city of Krakow in a framework contract that could see 90 new trams arrive on the system from 2028. The operator MPK is expecting to receive 32m single-ended (costing PLN 17.3M each), 32m double-ended (PLN 18.6M each) and 45m single-ended (PLN 28.5M each) trams. Up to 30 of each type could be ordered. The exact numbers of each type has still to be decided. Initially a firm order for 15 trams of each type will be placed. The only competition for PESA came for the 45m trams, where Skoda also submitted a bid. PESA’s bid was scored 92/100 while Skoda’s was 77.72/100. Interestingly neither Stadler nor Modertrans (Polands other tram builders) submitted a bid. PESA already delivered 36 low-floor Krakowiak trams to Krakow in 2024/15 but the city’s most recent order was for 110 Lajkonik (Tango) trams in 2018-2022.

Krakow has operated standard-gauge trams since 1913 and now has a 90km 22-line system with 292 motor trams and 59 trailers running from three depots. The arrival of the Twist trams will permit the last high-floor Konstal trams dating from 1979-1992 to be withdrawn.
