Coventry City Council has applied to give itself planning permission for the planned second VLR demonstration line, including 870m of tramway, platforms and depot facilities. The line will run from Park Road by Coventry Railway Station to Coventry University’s Mile Lane car park, with an intermediate stop at Mile Lane, where passengers will be able to board and alight. At the Mile Lane terminus passengers will be able to alight and board the VLR vehicle, but will not be able to leave the compound.
They will have to return to Mile Lane or Park Rd by VLR. The demonstration line is expected to be carrying passengers by October 2027, and will be used for limited public demonstrations until 2029. There is no news yet as to whether a refurbished original VLR will be the planned rolling stock. The Intelligent Transport Systems World Congress is being held at the National Exhibition Centre between Birmingham and Coventry in October 2027.
