Prague tramway extends again

In mid December 2024, the latest extension of Prague's quickly growing tram network opened. The newest addition to line 19 to Pankrác is just 300 m long, but it serves an important purpose. Previously this line's last extension opened in June 2021. The new terminus is beyond a busy road intersection and provides seamless interchange with the underground station of Metro line C at Pankrác. From January to December 2025, this station will actually be closed, as it gets converted to the new junction of Metro line C with the driverless Metro line D, which is currently under construction and due for opening in stages from 2029 to 2031. Hence the better accessibility of the new tram line 19 terminus will help divert passenger flows from Metro to tramway during underground station reconstruction in 2025. While the new tram extension features its own right of way in the middle of the road, due to space limitations, there is no turning loop, but just a stub track, thus making line 19 services only suitable for bi-directional vehicles. In the medium turn, it is planned to extend line 19 by a few more hundred metres further south to Budějovická.
