ATAC, the public transport operator of the Italian capital, took delivery of its first CAF Urbos tram on 5 March. Shipped from Spain via the Italian port of Civitavecchia, 9301 is now being commissioned a t the Via Prenestina ATAC workshops. In October 2023 a framework contract for up to 121 trams worth EUR 457M was placed with CAF; firm orders now total 80 after 20 more of the options were taken up. ATAC will receive 10 trams this summer and another 10 by the end of the year.
The delivery of 33.5m double-ended air-conditioned cars, each able to carry 215 passenger (68 seated), represents the first new tram on Roma’s system for 20 years. they will replace the remaining 7000-series Stanga cars dating from the late 1940s as well as the 9000-series SOCIMI partly low-floor trams from the early 1990s. They will also permit the extension of the network, with the new Togliatti tramway approaching completion.
