Although the new tramway has been carrying passengers since 28 April, the official inauguration was on 10 May when His Majesty, Philippe, King of the Belgians, visited the city and drove 45.4m CAF tram 5110 from the depot through the city centre. The 11.7km line is 90% on reserved track but includes some street running in the central area, where there are also wire-free sections as the trams can use their batteries to provide traction current. There was public entertainment at each of the 23 stops along the line.
