In October 2024 TRAX, the light rail operator in the Utah, Salt Lake City, placed the first order for Stadler LRVs in the US, with an initial requirement for 20 costing USD 129M. Now the firm order has been increased by 20 to 40, with options remaining for a farther 40. The 83-ft (25.3m) cars will be built in the Stadler factory in Salt Lake City, hitherto used for the production of railway multiple units (in particular the FLIRT). The fleet expansion was approved by the Utah Transit Authority(UTA) board of directors as part of the TRAX Forward project, that aims to expand and improve local public transport services in the region over the next 10 years.

Jay Fox, UTA Executive Director, said, ‘UTA is proud to partner with Stadler on the next generation of light rail vehicles. Stadler’s Utah manufacturing facility gives us the rare advantage of being in close proximity to the manufacturer to refine and optimise the vehicles during production. These low-floor barrier-free LRVs will enhance the customer experience and increase comfort, as well as help accommodate our growing ridership. Looking ahead to TRAX’s future, these new vehicles position UTA to continue to serve Utah’s communities for many years to come’.

The first 20 of the Stadler LRVs are due for delivery in 2027.
